how to shortin a 78-79 bronco dana 44

Post by alx »

first get the front axle striped and set it on a pair of jack stands ,take a few
measurements from both sides, so that you have something to compare to.
after you cut the end off you will need the measurements to align it back up .
take as many as you think you need its very inportant so it comes out straight
again

where all did you measure from?

I was thinking to mark several lines around the tube then reset it up so all the marks line back up.

I have been thinking of doing this for my EB to get a HP front...thanks

Thanks for the information ! Since you are leaving the wedge pieces on the housing I assume the preferred way to mount a 44 in a B2 is with coil springs and the 1/2 ton radius rods ?

you can do it either way, but it is just the most common. most ford D44's are coil sprung and the BII is coil sprung so it just makes sence. the factory ford 3 link is an easy system to set up and proven off road.

Thanks Alex. I used the original write up on torc4x4 website that is no longer online.

We should make a website. Matt if you want me to I can and email it to you.

Thanks !
I will cut the long side, respline the axle, and relocate the
radius rod mounts using the 1/2 ton mounts. I think I can figure out the
spring pocket and shock locations. (the steering linkage may be another story)

I'm wondering about caster now. The only way I can see to dial in positive caster would be lowering the back of the radius rod. I want street use, be an option.

I'm getting way ahead of myself here, but researching and planning a project is a big part of the fun.

This is a really good forum for B2 information, thanks again to all you guys

For steering use the Chevy 1 ton TRE's and threaded dom tube, it's the slick setup but you have to ream the knuckles and pitman arm (not hard).

For the caster you want to cut the other inner c wedge off and set the pinion angle then weld the c's on where ever you want the caster.

Ranger 5.o, needing another project like Rosie O'Donnell needs another M&M.
