Checking for engine error codes on a '88 / 2.9 litre.

Is a scanner needed to check for stored error codes? My local Auto Zone store will pull codes for free but only for '96 and newer vehicles.
I've had an erratic idle, now and then, since lifting the body 3" weeks ago and I've checked all the wiring harness under the hood in case a sensor lead was pulled apart. Found nothing. There's no engine light .... flashing or steady.... but somethings wrong.
I had the long rubber clean-air boot from the air filter box to the throttle body off and altered it for a better fit ... the 3" lift had made the connection strained. Don't think I created a problem there.
The cold start fast idle works and after a bit the idle drops to 1000. Then after warm it drops to 750. Kicks up some when put it gear as is normal. But it starts hard when hot and sometimes I have to hold the gas petal down some to hold an idle. After a bit, it will hold idle itself.
Any ideas?... Thanks, dave
