Is a scanner needed to check for stored error codes? My local Auto Zone store will pull codes for free but only for '96 and newer vehicles.
I've had an erratic idle, now and then, since lifting the body 3" weeks ago and I've checked all the wiring harness under the hood in case a sensor lead was pulled apart. Found nothing. There's no engine light .... flashing or steady.... but somethings wrong.
I had the long rubber clean-air boot from the air filter box to the throttle body off and altered it for a better fit ... the 3" lift had made the connection strained. Don't think I created a problem there.
The cold start fast idle works and after a bit the idle drops to 1000. Then after warm it drops to 750. Kicks up some when put it gear as is normal. But it starts hard when hot and sometimes I have to hold the gas petal down some to hold an idle. After a bit, it will hold idle itself.
Any ideas?... Thanks, dave
Checking for engine error codes on a '88 / 2.9 litre.
yes you can pull codes on that truck. the tool cost rigth at $40. and your local autozone will do it if they have the tool. you can buy a scanner at autozone or wal-mart.
the connectors should be on the passenger side fender well.

Yes...and it's so easy! Go here >>> http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13 , for an explanation. ( Thanks, FatMan). Just ground the stinkin' single pin at the STI connector and sit in your truck and watch the "check engine" light blink out any stored problems. You don't need to spend $40 bucks for a scanner.... instead spend it on any parts you might need.Is a scanner needed to check for stored error codes? if you want to read codes and have the haynes book on the bronco, they show you how to read them with only a volt meter if you really want to save money. sears also sells the code scanner for about 50 bucks.
I currently own 4 bronco 2's. Three of them are 89' of which two are 4x4 and love em. The other is an 85' 4x4 5-spd
