Starter gears 9 tooth or 10 tooth ?

Post by mccutcheon4 »

9 or 10 tooth starters ? I just read that a ten tooth is an upgrade ?

Is there a typical flywheel/starter glitch with these B2s ? My son and I just bought another 84 for $100.00 with no teeth on the flywheel. I'm starting to notice a pattern here. :wtf:

hmmmm..... I thought they were all the same

The problem with the starter is pretty much directly related to oil leaking from every orfice of your engine right on to your starter. This gums up the bendix preventing it from enguaging the flywheel properly and grinding the teeth off your flywheel.

Another typical problem is the starter bolts coming loose.

After a day of wheelin one time, I stopped at a store on the way home. I came out of the store to find my starter laying on top of my front axle......... Check them bolts! :redneck:

Starters

Post by mccutcheon4 »

I just bought a CD off E-bay item # 7019192329 that is suppose to have a-lot of information on these trucks (which remains to be seen) one of the the upgrades the author was touting was a 10 tooth starter up grade ?

Yesterday my son and I put another starter in his 84 B2 and it still makes a bunch of racket when engaged ? I checked the ring gear on the flywheel as close as I could with a mirror, the teeth all look good. I wonder why it makes so much noise ?

If it's an automatic, check the flexplate for cracks. My 85 started making some racket. I thought it was just loose starter bolts. It steadily got worse. Finally I tightened up the starter bolts, which were loose, one was actually missing. The noise never went away. Then it dawned on me that I had actually heard that sound before...so I check, and sure enough the flex plate was cracked. My was pretty severe. It doesn't have to be as bad as mine to make a bunch of racket.

look to see if the spacer plate is in between the motor and tranny.

spacer plate/ block plate

Post by mccutcheon4 »

Come to think of it, I don't think it does have the spacer plate between the
block and bellhousing. Its has the manual OD transmission. I could probably put a temporary shim between starter and bellhousing to test it.
Thanks
