C4 tranny

Post by WaPaul »

will the stock transfer case on a 1987 B2 2.9 4x4 (I think its a Borg Warner 1350) hook to a c4 tranny?

Advanced Adaptors makes headers for the 289 swap, $300 seems very high to me. Are there any other headers that fit? I have a 4 inch lift now but I will install a 2 to 3 inch body lift if I need to for more space around the frame, heater box, and tunnel.

I would think so. The early trannys used in the BIIs were C5s which are just beefed up C4s, but my '79 F100 had a C5 stock behind a 400 (2WD). The C5s were used with the 2.8L, I think the A40D was used specifically behind the 2.9L though.

That should be A4LD for the 2.9 auto trans.

Thanks for the info.

Here is my setup. 1968 289 from Mustang GT, C4 auto tranny (3 speed from a car) with the vent by the reverse servo, that says the C4 tranny is 1965? not sure on the first year, to 1969. I am looking for info on what I need to hook into the stock transfer case without paying huge money for adaptors.

I can get a Dana 20 tcase from our old family Scout. What will it take to hook up the Dana 20 to the C4.

Thanks Tek for the correction.

As far as the Scout's xfr case.. I have no ideas. I think I'd as soon look up an old BII for the C5/xfr case than go to the trouble though. Someone else will have to answer that question.

I have an 84' BII with a V8 conversion and also a C4 tranny from an early mustang. I didnt actually do the swap myself (I bought it like that), but the stock transfer case wont bolt up without the use of an adapter because the C4 is shorter than the stock tranny. The adapter that I have is probably 12 inches long or so and came from james duff. I dont know of or havent heard of any other way to get around not using an adapter. The only problem I have now is that I dont have the transmission kickdown linkage so it wont downshift unless I do that manually. Hope this helps.

Don't know what you $$ situation is, but take a look at this. You may be money ahead just buying the JD adapter if you know your tranny's good though:

Tommorrow morning I am going to Six States Distributors to meet with Ken the head of the drive line shop.

I came up with 2 options,

Take the transmission out of the B2 and copy the outer shape of the tail housing where it hooks to the transfer case on 1/4 inch steel. Then buy a drive line from the Junk yard that has the same spline as the C4, and take the output shaft from the current transmission I have in the B2 now. After I install the 289 and C4 I can see how long I need the drive line to be, then weld the slip spline to the old transmission shaft together, drill my 1/4 inch plate and fit it with a sealed bearing.

Option Number 2

if the Tranny is holding the Tcase solid, then I can take the Tail off the C4 and copy the Flange, then copy the tail of the B2 tranny where it hooks to the Tcase, get a 6 or 8 inch well case and weld the two flanges on the tube ends and vent the new tail. The drive line I would be the same for both ideas.

Does anyone know if the 1350 transfer case is sealed or does it share the oil the stock Bronco 2 transmission fluid?

After talking with Ken, I am going to build a short drive line, if the transfer case is not sealed I will still build the same drive line and make up the tail housing with the well case.

The transfer case and the transmission are separate. They do not share lube. Good luck on this, you might post your progress and maybe keep the dies that you use in case someone else would like to procure an adapter from you.

I am slowly getting the things together for the swap, but I am afraid to spend to much money to fast. The office staff and myself are the only ones left at work, the rest of the guys are laid off. Then I am working for the parent company part time too, Tapani Underground to stay busy. Things are looking up but its a slow climb.

I want to post pics of what I am doing but I do not know how to upload the pics, when I try, it says the file is to big. How do I post the pics? I posted the wrong year on the motor, 1966 289, not 1968.

As of now I am just cleaning the motor, I am leaving the heads on but I removed the intake and valve covers, sand blasted them and painted them and rebuilt the carb.

As I build the new drive line and braces I will post the pics with a little help on the posting.

Most of the cameras that are out allow you to change the "size" of the photos before you take them. If it's a newer camera and you haven't set this, the default will most likely be what camera advertises such as 5m or 7m which are way too big for this. Try setting it down to 1.3 or smaller.

Secondly you have a program on your computer called "Paint". Start | All Programs | accessories | Paint. You can open them in Paint and save them in the .jpg format. The .jpg format is the most compressed and therefore the size of the file is much smaller. If it's already in the .jpg format, you can open it in Paint, Image, Stretch and Skew and then change the 100% to less on both the horizontal and vertical. Keep both at the same percentage and then save in the .jpg format.

Good luck, let me know if you have difficulties.

I am working on getting my dog to get the right wrench or socket, then I will be on to something.

A little sandblasting and paint on the outside, and new lifters and a carb overhaul. I will tear it down and do a complete rebuild and a slight build next winter. The small oil filter is just on there to plug the hole, and let me turn the oil pump over and build oil pressure to see if it is all working right.
