4x4 pushbutton issue-strange

Post by king_of_my_bog »

I just got a 1990 Bronco II, it has some issues. Once I repaired the gas lines and got the throttle cable to move freely again, I tried the pushbutton 4wheel drive. No indicator lights come on, it does not engage and I can hear clicking coming from the lil' black box behind the kickpanel behind the drivers seat. This "black box" has a switch (reset maybe?) and a red LED light that comes on when you press the pushbutton switch on it. NOTE: black box has the name "United Technologies Automotive"' on its face. In short, what is this black box, is the button on it in fact a reset and why would it click only when pressing the 4 wheel drive engagement on the dash?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, this is my first Ford, I haven't a clue on some of the Ford controls.

Thanks

Are you making any headway on this problem?

You might want to slide under the truck and see if the wiring on the transfer case looks intact.

The black box behind the drivers seat turned out to be the 4x4 controller. It was fine, the motor on the T-case was siezed up, I disassembled, cleaned & reassembled and works fine now. Thanks for the tip though. Great lil' truck for tooling around my place. Am wondering though, I've read a number of articles about welding the spider gears. Is this a viable option for POSI? I am only driving this POS on dirt/mud, so I think it would be easier on the "tire scuff" issue when welding the gears, but I'm no expert...any advice?

Welding the spider gears does work good. It does make it a little harder to steer. I only broke one axle and that is because I left the ground with all fours and landed back down on the one axle first. Make sure to take the carrier out before you start to weld. :redneck:
