5.0L Alternator

Post by Dreded »

Ok im continuing to do the 5.0 swap Part II and am just wondering if it is possible to use the stock Alternator from the BII Instead of the one for the 5.0L

The reason I want to do this is because the one for the BII has all the right wiring harness stuff and I dont have to splice anything.

The problem is I am wondering if I can just switch the pulleys as the 5.0 is Serpentine belt and of course the BII is V-Belt

Any ideas or suggestions would be great :)

not having done that myself, I would guess as long as the serp belt would turn the same way it should be ok to swap pullys.

have them give you a part number for both at the parts store and if they are the same you should be in good shape.

i would make sure they spine the right dicection because i know that one some water pumps they spine reverse because of the serp belt. Mine was easy to wire up they had the same color wires.

Did you use the stock regulator off the BII then? The alternator I have with the v8 has no wiring harness all the wires attach with seperate bolts to sandwich the wires on.

I got it done before but i know it was wrong somehow because the lights would dim at an idle and the turn signals would flash REALLY slow but the battery always had a good charge.

if your lights dim at idle, it could be a bad alternator. There is a diode that goes out and gives that symptom. I'd have it tested.

Alternators should have an exciter wire that comes on with ignition, The larger wire for output, a ground, and sometimes a wire for the electric choke that goes to the stator or whatever...12v while running.

do you have a volt meter? If so start up the truck and test the power at the batter, you should have 14 V. I ran it threw the stock regulator.

the pullies are interchangeable and they spin in the same direction

if you need a new one tho upgrade to a higher output 62A just ain't enough

ok well today I got the alternator wired in what i did is quite simple and is the way to go if you ask me.

I swapped the pulley's and the mounting plate on the alternator so I ended up with the stock alternator and the mounting plate for the stock one off the V8 so it mounts perfectly and just plugs right in. :D
