had a good 3.0 to put in it. guess that wont work. is there a 4 banger that will bolt up?

Since it appears you've given up on the 2.9, you might consider a 4.0 swap. Lots written about this on different forums. You don't mention the vehicle involved, but swap is easiest on 89 and newer Rangers and B2s.
