Need help finding what engine I have

Ok I have an 87 B2 that I bought off of a kid on craigslist about 2 months ago, he said that it had a newer crate motor in it. The motor says 2.9L on the intake, but I've bought a new drain plug, air filter, and even spark plugs and I had to return them all because they weren't the right size. And I've been trying to set the timing on it and on the catalyst it says it needs to be 10 degrees, so i put it at 10 degrees and it still isn't running right, but its running a lot better from when I got it. And I was wondering if there is any way of finding out exactly what size motor it is?
