I have an 88 that is awesome. Lately I have been having issues with the starter and flywheel not engaging properly. I had the fly wheel replaced (That is to much for me to handle) then I replaced the starter. There is no shim and it is torqued down properly, but I cant get them working right. Any suggestions?

Did you get correct starter? Auto and manual are different.

Everyone is telling me (autozone and o'reily) are telling me there is only one kind. I will double check. Thanks

I recently started working as a mechanic professionally and my shop gets all our parts from napa. Maybe advance if napa doesn't have it. I can definitely tell a difference in quality. Ill never go back to orielys or autozone again. I would return it and go to napa. They will probably even price match.

Is oil leaking from the valve cover or intake manifold and working it's way on to the starter? I've seen that gum up the starter preventing the bendix gear from moving freely.

Also, the holes on the starter are large enough to allow some adjustment. Loosen the bolts slightly and make sure the starter is pushed all the way toward the flywheel.

Lastly, I agree that all starters are not created equal. Make sure you are buying quality parts. Napa is generally pretty good. Parts with a lifetime warranty often are garbage right out of the box.

I have had the same problem. does it grind and then chew the starter drive up? if it is the case the only solution is to change the starter drive with one from a 1.9 escort. it is a 10 tooth drive while the old will be 9 tooth. it will more than likely solve your problem. I have had this problem and it worked on many a ford I have owned.
