Engine Cleaning

Post by rainlyj »

So, my B2 needs some work - for sure, but until I can afford more parts, I was thinking maybe I could clean it up a little and keep working on the ratty interior.

I remember being told at some point that it is not a good idea to just hose down the engine... Like they have the "engine cleaner" selection at the carwashes and using them would be bad. Is that really a bad idea? I would like to do something to make it look better in there, even if its one piece at a time with a toothbrush, but I was hoping to get some tips.

Thanks!

Before I started tearing mine down to replace a bunch of gaskets, I took it to a shop that specializes in engine cleaning, top and bottom. It was money well spent even though it didn't take care of the caked on oil and grease. They did their best to dry everything out before I started the drive home, but it was so much water, I got about a mile down the road before it cut out and died. Had to get it towed home. The next morning it started up fine though after it had time to dry out I suppose.

Anything I've taken off the engine....brackets, heads, valve covers....I've taken to a local Carquest machine shop and they do an excellent job with cleaning and painting parts....when I got my heads back, it looked like they gave me a brand new set and threw the old ones out.

Anyways, that's my experience....I would imagine if you took it to degrease at a carwash, there's a high possibility of soaking things to the point of not being able to drive home.

One other tip that has been a time saver is buying a wire wheel brush that I can attach to my drill....$3 or $4 for that and I've been blasting away the dirt.....it's been more effective than brake and engine cleaner. A can of compressed air can help blow out dirt in hard to reach places.....just make sure intake holes and such are covered up.

Saw an article where a guy had his Bronco on a trailer and took it to one of those local car washes and blasted alot of dirt away and then just towed it home.

Hope this helps.
