Battery Terminals and Solenoid get hot, and melts wires

Post by kreppnar »

Hello,

I was driving my 1988 Ford Bronco 2 XLT 4x4 2.9L at about 35MPH, when i came to a stop at a light and it stalled. It wouldn't start again after that. I was forced to push it to the side of the road and i opened the hood, and noticed the Solenoid was smoking and the positive battery terminal was melting. So i took all the wires off the solenoid, and cleaned them up with a wire brush, and made sure all my connections were clean and tight. I was able to get it to start once more, but the truck would not stay running. I had to keep pumping the gas, just to keep it slowing chugging, and when i would release the gas, it would shoot up to normal idle.(This is a fuel injection by the way). I was able to get the truck to stay running at a good idle. I thought possibly that i could at least get it running for a little while longer down the road, and at about another quarter mile, it died again. So now the problem i have, is that it wont start at all. It turns over, but nothing seems to start it.

Here is a easy to read list of what has happend so far:

1.) Truck stalls at stop light
2.) The starter does a slow crank,(sounding like it doesn't want to turn at all), not a quick crank like a normal starter should
3.) Positive Battery Terminal / Cable to the Solenoid gets VERY Hot, and melts the wire
4.) No Fuses are blown

Thanks!

So i pulled the starter, and the wires. Gonna replace the cables to the starter and the Pos Battery post. Also going to get a new Solenoid just cause. Checked all the fuses, and they are ok. Hopefully a new starter will fix things. Seem's like it only pops the gear out sometimes.
