87 BII question - injectors - fuel pressure - and more

Hey all.....I'm in the process of tearing into the engine on my 87 BII 2.9L to fix some leaking oil issues, starting with the valve covers.

Since I am taking it all apart, I figured I might as well check into everything else, so I have a couple of questions.
  • - I want to take the fuel rail off to inspect the injectors and so I can replace the gaskets on the lower mani and I noticed the manual says I need to release the pressure from the fuel system using a hand pump. Since I don't have a hand pump, I was hoping there was another way to do this so I don't spill fuel all over the place. Anyone know?

    - Should I go ahead and replace the fuel injectors since I have the engine apart? I've only had the BII for about 8 months and have no idea if this was done before.

    - When I drained the coolant, I noticed some oil in the coolant but only when it first started draining out, then no more oil while the rest of the radiator drained. Is this a big deal?

Thanks for any help.

you don't have to pull the fuel rail to do the lower intake. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless you have a miss, Injectors are probally OK. Ford had a recall on the lower intake that would leak at the corners (that recall kept food on my table for awhile and only paid 4.2hrs) But it would leak coolant into the engine, not oil into the coolant. The recall intake gasket had 2 "tits" on the back. I never used a hand pump, just unhooked the lines. Oil pressure is higher than water pressure so keep an eye on you coolant and oil floats on coolant so I think you would notice it when you take your cap off or in the overflow bottle.

Thanks for the post.

Any idea how many bolts to get the lower intake off? So hard to see everything clearly through all the wires and stuff...I'm not sure how much work is involved with that.

Once you get the upper off it's easy to see. The Dist. bolt kinda hard. I always pointed the rotor at the firewall and marked it. Snap-on make a great dist tool but you should be able to get it with a wobbly. Pull the Alt, and a/c compressor. you don't have to undo the a/c lines just take the 10mm bolt off the back of the upper intake and move it out of your way. pull the upper and put rags in the holes. then take the valve covers off.
