Bronce II is there a year to look for? Tech advice for first

I have decided my next fun project will be a Bronco II 4x4, plus the wife likes the boxy look. She drives a Ford Flex haha.

Anyways, I've done the research and know of some quirks etc but from a standpoint of engine whats the best year? At best it will have a 3-4 lift so is there a better year with a solid axle thats cheaper to lift? Little things like that. I can do all work myself so not worried about a shop with extra costs. It will be a driver so air/heat and dependability is wanted so like I said what year would sum this up best? A early one or a late 90 model?

I know everyone has a year they love and everyone has opinions but that aside in the Bronco II world what is considered a good year and with what options should I start my first with? I guess that leads to options, any good or bad to avoid or get?

Thanks a ton, I hope to find one by next month in the Dallas area. Any input is appreciated.

Bill

My preference would be the last year the B 2 was made and that would be 1990. Options are just that Options. You really have to think personal preference there. I would recommend a stick and a manual transfer-case. Limited Slip Differentials are good to have. That's my nickles worth.

Im looking at a 1989 Bronco II 4wd, 2.9L. to purchase for doing a 4.0 liter swap . Can you tell me if this is the best year of bronco to do the 4.0 swap, Also what year of Ranger and or Explorer should I be looking to purchase for the doner truck ? I would really like to talk to someone on the phone about this matter if possible before I buy anything , can I get a phone number ?

Any year should suffice your 89 sounds fine Look for a 91-94 Explorer for the engine and trans. Don't forget to get the computer and wiring harness.

The 2nd gen BII ('89-'90) are the easiest for a 4.0 swap. A '90 Ranger 4.0 swap into a '90 BII is probably the easiest. Far cheaper to buy a complete 1st gen Ex and swap over everything; engine/trans/t-case/axles/wiring/etc.
