Depends on what you want? Rock crawler, mud bogger, jacked up street queen with big tires, basic trail rider? How much money do you want to spend? Does it need to be or remain a daily driver?
FWIW, good tires with front and rear lockers will allow even an otherwise stock truck to perform amazingly well.

4litre v6 explorers are available here, will be used as a daily, but also will be trailing in it with fellow offroad nuts in their landrovers, toyotas and the like and money wise dont wanna go nuts but willing to pay for right mods/bits

From a 1st generation Explorer, the front d35 axle is a bolt in and a decent upgrade. You can also use the 8.8 rear axle but it requires welding on the axle pads and shock mounts. The Explorer 4.0 is a nice upgrade also, bolts right in but requires some wiring changes, more or less depending on what year BII you have. The 4.0 also requires you use a "4.0" transmission, not the stock trans behind your 2.9. The Explorer springs will also bolt right in and give an inch or so of lift over stock.
I'd look for at least a factory limited slip rear axle. If you don't see snow in your area and don't need 4x4 on the street, maybe look to get some kind of locker for the front axle. If you have auto hubs up front maybe swap them out for a set of Warn manuals.
Do you have tools and a place to work? Ability to swap axles/engines, etc., or are you looking for "bolt on" type mods?

got tools and garage including lifts and ramps at my disposal so thats not a prob and also welding gear, and i am a mechanic/engineer so does not matter if its bolt on mods or weld etc
