gas tank removal / low pressure fuel pump replacement

I have two B2's. One is an 86 and the other is a 90. Both fuel gauges do not work. On the 86 it shows it as being full when its full but after burning off about 10 gallons it shows it as being empty. On the 90 the guage doesn't move and always reads as being empty.

I'm thinking its the low-pressure fuel pump which also has the fuel guage sending unit built into the pump. I have the Chilton and know how to pull the tank but was wondering if anyone has actually pulled one and replaced the pump. I don't have the special tool to remove the pump.

Is my guess at it being the sending unit a good guess?

On the 90 you only have one fuel pump in the tank. That pump has then built on sending unit. Its a one piece replacement. You dont need any special tools. Just unbolt the skid plate and then unbolt the straps and then you can lower the tank. I would disconnect the filler tube and disconnect the gas lines at the sending unit in the tank when you lower it a little to access it. Then to take out the sending unit, loosen the retaining ring and then pull the old pump/sending unit out and replace it with a new one. Pretty simple really. Also on the fuel line connectors, I just used a wide flat head screw driver to take off and did not damage it at all and reused them. I hope this helps.

Thanks, that does help. Chilton also says to disconnect the negative battery cable to present any sparks when the wires are disconnected at the pump. It also helps if the tank is near empty.

They may be separate parts but where I've checked they are only sold together. I've only checked at O'Brian's.

I will. I've only owned the 1990 one day and other items are higher on the list. This list isn't the priority order as some non-Bronco items are higher.

Not working:

Cruise control
windshield washer
air conditioning is cool but not cold (need to test on a hot day)
fuel gauge

I just took some pics and will be posting them in an hour or so.
