Freeze Plug Replacement...

Hey there...first post here...
First, I'm totally new to the bronco 2. I have the opportunity to pick on up cheap. I believe its in fair to good condition for its age, but its main issue is a failed freeze plug. Its the one located right up against the flywheel.
My question is, can that hard to reach freeze plug be replaced without yanking the engine? And is there anything specific to broncos that caused a freeze plug failure? The truck has just under 150k miles on it. It'll start and run but it'll blow oil like a fountain obviously.
I can get it for a song but I'd like to know if I'm gonna need a cherry picker and the whole nine to get it running...

You said freeze plug and then said if the engine was started it will blow oil! 
however There are plugs called galley plugs in the back of the block closing off the ends of the main oil feeds to the cam and top end. 
If you have engine oil pumping out in a stream you got something serious going on. If you need to work on the back of the motor you either drop the trans and transfer case or pull the motor your choice...
