Well after putting my 85 Bronco II into 4 wheel drive for the first time (Manual lockouts) considerable noise began at appear. I took it out of 4 wheel drive and the noises persisted and created a lot of drag on the wheel. While attempting to limp it home the front wheel popped off. Well, the brake caliper kept the wheel on, but it appears that the rotor is no longer attached to the axle and there's lots of broken bits and pieces of what was once there.
So, to the question! I have another 85 BII parts truck that has auto hubs on it. Could it be as simple as replacing the stuff from the parts truck onto the runner, or perhaps more damage has been done to the axle.
There's lots of talk about converting from Auto to Manual but I couldn't find anything about going from Manual to Auto. Is there any issues that I need to understand before getting into this work. Hey, worse case scenario I switch the whole axle over, but if I can get by just replacing the parts necessary to put the rotor back on and the auto hubs, that would be preferred at this point!

Very similar thing happened to me, i first noticed i had hardly any brakes and then it would wobble and what not, so a couple miles later it felt like the whole driver side front wheel kicked sideways and almost threw me into oncoming traffic, so i pulled into the first place i could find and as soon as i slowed down the wheel fell, i think i threw a bearing causing the wheel to wobble the brake pads loose and all the bearings and washers and shit were completely destroyed, they dont make some of that stuff for the dana 28 anymore so u need to go to a junk yard, the wheel bearings that go inside the rotor are still sold though and they are ten bucks each and 2 per wheel, while ur fixing the one side, go ahead and replace the other side stuff too. i would just stick with manual locking hubs, the auto locking are notorious for not working, unless ur parts truck has reliable auto locking hubs.
