need major tranny help...

Okay so I have an 86' 4X4 automatic and my dad was towing, it not sure what happened but it fell into gear. Tranny caught fire he saved the car then took it to an Aamco here in San Diego. They opted to get a tranny and transfer case cores then rebuilt them. Nothing but problems... it's been back a total of 5 times because when the car is cold "like over night" it will not shift.
My question is... is there someone Aamco can buy a fully "reliable" tranny from? Im sure you can't get a "new" tranny beacuse the car is so old, but I'm at my wits end with Aamco and will never take another car there. Any help would be great.
