Noise in Tranny
Noise in Tranny
ok so I bought this 88 b2. had trouble shifting between gears so I put a new pilot bearing, throwout bearing, pressureplate, etc. and a new rear main seal in it. It was making a noise like cutting a quarter inch piece of steel with a bandsaw in every gear but fourth (which is quiet as can be) before I replaced the clutch. It's still doing it?! haven't checked the fluid yet, but wondered what it could be??

Re: Noise in Tranny
should of checked the fluid first, how much play in the input shaft??
Re: Noise in Tranny
Did not check the play in the input shaft. When i put the new throwout bearing on, i unbolted the slave cylinder. i noticed grooves on almost half the inside of it. The input shaft has gooves covering it so i cleaned them both off and put it back together with out thinking too much of it.

Re: Noise in Tranny
its possible the front bearing is gone. what does the end of the input shaft look like?? where it goes in the piliot bearing
Re: Noise in Tranny
I didn't really look at it. The only other time i pulled a tranny was a 95 civic, and then i was mainly watching. What should it look like?
Re: Noise in Tranny
would a tranny from a 1990 four cylinder ranger fit my b2? I found one for a hundred bucks here in lynchburg. I haven't looked at any id tags yet.

Re: Noise in Tranny
if yours is a 4x4 try to find another 4x4 one. you can make a 2wd a 4x4 by swapping the rear shaft and housing( have to disasemble both trannys).but then you have to stay with the same model trans.
Re: Noise in Tranny
So tomorrow I'm goin to the junk yard to see if i can find a tranny. Mine has the 12 bolt pan on the bottom of it. Is that a mitsubishi? Any trany with 4x4 and 6 cyl will bolt right up i think. Is there one thats got lower gearing?

Re: Noise in Tranny
your 88 should have the Mitsubishi FM146 12 bolt pan and syncro reverse. the fm145/146 have the lowest 1st gear(3.76:1]
the 4.0 M5OD has a 3.40:1 first gear. look for a 88 and up.if you get a fm145, get the driveshafts too, cause that tranny is shorter, and youll have to move the crossmember forward
1st pic.146 shifter(the M5OD looks just like it)

Re: Noise in Tranny
No junk yard around here has anything.... I found a couple of people who had m5od's from 4.0L '92 and 98' rangers. Did mazda make any changes to the R1 or is it the same bolt patterns all the way up to 2000?
