1986 Bronco II, 2.9 gasoline engine. Runs very vrey well, but driver's side of motor covered in motor oil. I suspect it comes from top of dipstick tube. Removed and reinstalled dipstick tube. Ok no rust holes. Dipstick itself covered with oil all the way up.
Not sure if this is normal. Could a bad PCV cause this? Not a case of overfill.

I would check that pcv valve first. But it sounds like you may have a blow-by problem, that's when the pressure from the combustion chamber passes the rings and pressurizes the crank case and this will push the oil up the dip stick tube. A ring job is in order if this the case, I would pull the air cleaner out to see if its oily too, as this is another indication of blow-by.

That's fast! I'll test that valve and check the air filter. Hopefully, I won't have to proceed any further. However, would a compression test show maybe one cyl way lower than the others? It sure is peppy, though. Ah well, time will tell.......

If you still has blow by here's a little tip to help keep the oil from blowing out the tube.
Ask the wife or girlfriend for a small piece of FELT fabric just slightly bigger than the dipstick tube. Cut a slot in the middle of the fabric and slide it on the dipstick like it was a gasket. The felt will allow some air to escape but the oil mist is stopped. Give it a try..

Now I was able to sign on. The felt trick is neat. One retirement gift I made myself was a cobbler's closing inventory, machines and all. Boy can I sew belts, haha

Went to village tonight with one tiny cloth just knotted around stick . 6 miles total. Not a drop. So monday it'll be testing pcv, hose, breather, air filter, then while we're at it, why not a compression test while it's in warm garage....

I got this Bronco II 2 yrs ago because all the garagists in our little village had given up trying to make it work the least bit properly. Was totally fubard. (fucked up beyond reasonable doubt). Sluggish, no guts, stalling. Well, dontcha know even the frame gas pump was new. And ta-da: some old Ford retiree listened to it and ordered the gas pressure regulator then and there. Everyone had made sure there was gas pressure. But there was TWICE the pressure needed. Maybe this could help someone someday.
Cost me the regulator and another moduile that controls it. $200 Cdn.Not the tiniest fart since, even at -30F.

It WAS the PCV valve. Drove 20 miles on highway, little rag knotted at top of dipstick tube stayed bone dry !
