How do I check to see if a tie rod is worn out?

I have the stock suspension.

I was checking things on the driver's side wheel after changing the tire.

If I pull and push on the bottom of the wheel when it is on the jack I have some play.

I can see some movement of the cap of the tie rod, no movement on the ball joints according to the procedure in the Chilton's manual.

I already replaced the front inner and outer bearings, rotor, and brakes.

jearking on a tire either front to back or top to bottom you will and should always have just a touch of play, this is the bearing cage letting the rollers mover around. it should me no more than a couple thousands of an inch, but you feel a little like a tiny pop. the best way i found to check a tire rod is to put the front axle on jack stands, turn the steering wheel to it locks without the key in, then take a pry bar and put it between the tierod end and the knuckle and put pressure back and forth. the tire rod top will rotate but should not have and play in it.
