ive got a 1986 bronco II v6 fuel injected and on friday on my way home from work it started stuttering like crazy like it was majorly missing sparks. It was a huge issue, and i had to get my car towed home. It has recently gotten hot out here, as the weather got really nice, so i thought maybe it was just because of the heat outside. So i went outside early the next morning when it was cool out and tried it then, it started fine and then it started doing that again right away. 3 months ago i changed my tfi modular, spark plugs, wires, ect, and i cant figure out what the heck is going on now. The car is not driveable right now so id like to try to figure this out from home. Any help??? It seems to be running really rich, as i am getting more exhaust out of the back and it smells richer...i dunno

help??

My 89 did this a few times and started shaking REALLY bad during each little session. It would only do it every now and then but it hasnt done it in like a year....
Must not have been that serious cause the thing runs fine now.

a code reader was around $40 when I bought mine.

you might try to just unplug, I don't know...the o2 sensor to send it into a "limp home" mode and see if it will drive smooth enough to get it to autozone...

i can start it up now, but after it runs for like 30 secs to a minute it starts doing it again, i am really stumped, ill look into getting a code reader to see whats up then, if anyone else has some suggestions that would be appreciated

might be a clogged cat. and I don't think the code reader will help you with that.

are you able to unbolt your cat. from your exhaust or is it all welded together?

Well i was going to have to say Vaporlock at first but after reading more of you post it doesnt seem to be this. Like another poster said, it could be your cat clogged I had a 89 2.9 4x4 ranger do this and that was the problem. I just removed the resonator and cat and it was good to go. I would use a code reader before doing anything dramatic. Also was your B2 starting to stink bad when getting on it before this happened? Also heard of the fiberglass breaking out of the glasspack if you have on and clogging it as well.

look in the haynes or chilton manual there is a alternate way to pull codes with a multi meter. you can buy one at autozone or walmart for really cheap maybe $5 or $10. get the cheapest one with a needle and you count the series of sweeps and that will give you the code.

I am surprized that no one has mentioned fuel pressure regulator. Or maybe someone did.
You say you hear the fuel pump run? Does it ever shut off?
What color was the smoke from the tailpipe when it was stuttering and blubbering? if it was black that means to much fuel and not enough air.
You do have fuel in the tank? always a good thing to double check.

Ok, now try this. First turn the key on for 10 seconds then turn the key off.
Now take a rag in hand and locate the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Remove the cover cap. while holding a rag over it use the flat end of a small drill bit and depress the little valve in the middle. Be careful because that valve should be under pressure! Hold your rag so you don't get sprayed with fuel. ******OBSERVE*****what happens? Hmm nothing but just a little tiny squirt of fuel? Maybe no fuel at all. No fuel at all could be a blockage in the delivery system of a failed pump. Still even if there is no fuel at the Schrader valve it could also be the fuel regulator. Pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and check for traces of gasoline in the vacuum line. If fuel is in vacuum line the regulator is bad. Even if you seem to be getting some fuel pressure be sure to check that vacuum line. The gas will be very evident if it is bad..

Try the things I suggested then get back to us.

i checked out the schrader valve and the fuel regulator and the schrader valve had pressure, and the fuel regulator vacum line was free of fuel, so we know its not the fuel delivery system then, right? what would be my next step do you think?

also my cadaliac converter is welded on so i could just take it off, but when i tapped it, it sounded like rocks or glass was in there, in pieces.

cut the exhaust pipe fwd of the cat and seperate the pipes. if it runs then you know the problem if thats not it then any auto store sells a coupling or band clamp to repair the cut. if you have stuff rattling around in your cat its not a good thing.if the cat is bad the stores also sell different lengths of pipe that you can splice in until you can get a cat to put back in. a piece of pipe and clamps total should cost at most $20 so nothing major
