Why does low range work But not 4 wheel drive.

Ok, first things first, I just bought two B2s, an 87 and a 90. The 90 had a bad engine but good 5 speed manual trans , the 87 has a bad auto trans but a good engine. I pulled the engine out of both, swapped all the 90 parts to the 87 with new clutch, water pump, etc. Got it running good and went to test the 4x4 and found that the automatic t-case works, as it went into low range, then I romped on it a few times and notice its just spinning the back tires, why? It has automatic hubs, could that be the problem? I suspect the bronco has been sitting a while, but it appears to have been very well taken care of. Any suggestions welcome. I will have pics up as soon as I get my camera working again. Also, what is a comfortable size tire to put on a B2 with just a couple inches of lift.
Just to clarify, the 87 is the donor. The 90 is the one being fixed.

Auto hubs tend to do just what you are talking about sounds like time to switch over to warn hubs.

well i bought my bronco II recently and first thing i noticed was 4X4 didnt work... it went into low range but no power to the front wheels... this is because the transfer case works fine so it puts your gearing in low when u hit low range... but the hubs fail to lock in so the front tires never get power.....
i had to figure all this out on my own and it was really annoying so ill save u the trouble like the guy above me said and say...buy manual locking warn hubs.... i installed mine and have had zero issues since...
