Been a while, getting back to the 2.9 rebuild.

Hi all, it's been since last June that I was tearing the spare motor apart for a rebuild.

The bored, cleaned and painted Ford blue bare block has been sitting 'till now waiting for me. :D

Finally got started this week-end. Verified main brg oil clearances and now the cranks in. Checked fresh bore/piston clear., new rod brg./journal clear., and all 24 ring end-gaps. All is nice... shop did good work.

Need a ring compressor tool, so I stopped for now, But...

BIG QUESTION !

I have a Federal Mogul, Sealed Power premium rng set which I think is supposed to have moly coated rings? ? (Something like that).

Anyhow, reading the directions, I'm not sure which ring is the top and which is the bottom comp. ring.

There's 6 rings that are dark gray all over EXCEPT they have a bare metal, dull metal, not shiny like chrome, look to the ring face. They also have a band of yellow and band of red paint on them.

Then the other 6 are dark gray all over...even the ring face. They have a single band of yellow paint on them.

So, I'm thinking the dark gray is a moly coating ...6 rings coated all over and 6 coated everywhere BUT the face.

Now the instructions say, " Install bright face, (chrome or moly), compression rings in the top groove if supplied".

Ok,... "bright face" ...... well 6 are a dull metal look...(thats not "bright" in my book), but the other 6 are dark gray.... (also not "bright" in my book).

What's up with that?

The rings are all the same shape...rectangular. All have a dot on one side to show what side goes up.

Anyone know ? ?

Thans guys, Dave

I got the answer from Federal Mogul. The box was partitioned off with the three types of rings dropped in the right partition ... and marked. Once I took 'em out I was screwed. Anyhow,:

"all dark = moly coated =bottom ring.
" dull metal sealing face = top ring.

Got a ring compressor to now. Alright.

Yeah maybe, but it was my bad for just pulling the rings out of the box without looking at the box carefully. After the big flap is openned on the ring-set box, there's three more smaller flaps over the partitioned sections. Each of the three flaps were marked what ring was under it.

I just totally missed it.
