Hey i just got my 86 Bronco 2 bone stock and am working on doing all my moifications before i get my licence. I want to do the 4.0 swap and have a tie on and angine but the tranny is gone.
Will the 5 speed mitsu tranny bolt straight up to the 4.0? My question is are the bell housings the same?
Tranny=Bolt up?
All 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 destined for a rear wheel drive vehicle(known as the "Cologne" engine) share the same bell housing pattern, As best i know they also all have the same flywheel bolt pattern and will interchange.
I have a 4.0 in my 88 BroncoII, with a A4LD flywheel, 2.8 torque converter,and a c5 tranny

4.0 upgrade
ok i officially have my 4.0 uprgade complete but there is a few things i realized you definatly have to have to do the upgrade ...... you need the throttle linkages form the explorer and the fuel lines from the filter to the motor and yes i mean grab the disconnect ends off the explorers fuel filter all the way to the manifold because they are both female on the 4.0 and on the 2.9 you have one male and one female, you will also want the 4.0's radiator you can use the 2.9 radiator from the bronco but you will be restricting the cooling time inside the radiator since the 4.0 is dual elements and the 2.9 is single, you will need the wiring harness and you will need a manual for both motors with electrical schematics. currently the only thing i have left is the wiring on mine but i will be putting a list together for everyone who is interested once i get done of the wiring interchanges and splices by color coding for this upgrade.....but i will be starting my wiring tomorrow.
EDIS
also make sure you grab the EDIS sensor off the radiator support behind the battery ..... it should say EDIS on it somewhere..... if not it will have a yellow/black, yellow/red, yellow/white, red/lightgreen, black/white, grey, brown, black or shielded wire, pink/orange, orange/black, and tan/yellow, and one more wire dont remember the color at the moment...... but you will need the EDIS or ( Electronic Distribitorless Ignition System module) witjhout it the truck will not fire and run.
Tranny bolt in
remember to place the shim plate back between the motor and tranny, as this will be needed or you will have your starter dragging the flywheel.
the only reason i say to remember to use the shim plate is i forgot to install mine when i did my upgrade and i have to pull it back apart to install mine now, its the only thing keeping mine from being on the road, the starter is dragging the flywheel so it is a definate have to do, form the best i can tell, i personally hate the thought of installing it now, but gotta do what you gotta do...... thats what i get for not putting it in in the first place.
