Gstank fuelpump not working. = poor running? ?

When I pulled my gastank fuel level sender unit out to see whats up with it, I discovered the pump isn't working. With 12 volts on it it doesn't run.
So, the question is, can a Bronco actually run without that pump supplying pressure to the frame rail mounted one?
I know the tank pump is a "low pressure" pump, but still....
As far as the sender unit.... man I played with that thing for 3 hours.... trying to make it work consistantly.
Problem is the slide-wire is worn where the "brush" contact travels along it. Mainly from 1/2 tank to empty. ( And thats exactly how the guage on the dash works ... full to 1/2 works ... 1/2 to empty doesn't).
Plus the float pivot arm is sloppy loose in the plastic case that houses the slidewire/brush assy. Makes for a very difficult "fix". ( I'm a cheap ba$tard).
Oh well, looks like $100 for a new one.
