Got a good one for ya!

Post by greenmachine89 »

I have a 1989 B2 with a little problem. When I pull my lights on all the way the headlights only come on, when I push the switch about a 1/4 of an inch my dash and rear lights come on along with my door chime. When push the knob in half way then I get nothing. Now I have a fuse that keep blowing it is a 20 amp and I have checked EVERYTHING to see why it is blowing. Also all my lights work when the fuse is replaced with a 30amp fuse but if a 20amp is installed then it blows right when I pull the lights. I have taken out the radio because a friend of mine said that his was doing the same thing so he took out his radio because it had a short in it and that fixed the problem. I still am stuck with the same problem. If anyone knows ANY idea then that would be great! Thanks :hmmm:

Okay, I had this problem, and went through a few switches before it finally got tracked down. First, replace that headlight switch. The easiest way to do it is to take the gauge pod out, once that is out, it is very easily accessable. You don't have to take the pod completely out, just remove the bolts and move it out of the way. You can go under the dash, but that is hard, and you need to get a good look at the plastic connector. Mine burnt up real bad from a short, which is what blew the switch. If thats okay, just replace that switch. and make any repairs/jury-rigs to the connector. Just for shits and giggles, once you're done in the dash, take the steering column cover off and pull the multifunction switch (turn signals, brights, etc...) and check it and its connector. I had another short there, two actually, and ended up having to cut the entire connector out of another truck to replace mine, and the multifunction switch, cause they are expensive new. If thats all done and you still have problems, well.... I don't know what to tell you, but I chased the same problem around for like six months cause I didn't have the time to open the dash, and my switch connector was burnt, and it was like a $2 fix. Have fun.
