Oil Pressure question

Post by garagedude »

My stock 84 has about 45 to 55 when started cold but when warmed up it will carry 40 on the highway at 3000 rpm's but if I stop at idle the oil pressure will go to 15 sometimes as low as 8 when warmed up. In cold weather it will stay about 12 to 20 at idle. My thoughts are that the engine is not getting enough oil at idle..will the 2.8 last with this low of oil pressure? I'm not wanting to rebuild the engine just yet. In hot weather I will go to nuetral at stop signs to let the pressure go a little higher and then drop it in gear when the light turns green. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks garagedude

Rule of thumb is 10psi for every 1000 rpm. Sounds like your engine is getting a little worn, but I'm sure you have many miles left. Even when rods are knocking they can run for a long time if you drive them nice. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Put some 20w-50w in and forget about it.

Oil Pressure question

I'll try that. I tryed some "high mileage oil" but I couldn't tell any differance in it and was probably a waist of money. What about some oil additives? Ever used "Motorkote"??

Generally speaking, additives are a waste of money. I wouldn't bother.

If you think about it, what is an additive going to do? It's not going to put your bearings or rings back to new. In some conditions, it's said that additives can make your seals swell and stop leaks. If it works at all, it's going to be very temporary. Other additives like slick 50 use teflon, which plugs up your oil filter. Additives also tend to do a number on spark plugs.
