Is there a way to test the compressor on an 86 2.9L before I just assume it's shot?

I put a guage(walmart brandthat comes with freon) on the low side and it reads in the blue/filled section.

Blowing hot air wide open. The compressor seems to cycle on and off at noisy 30 second or so intervals.

Is there a relay or fuse anywhere I should check?

Thanks!

A/C

Hi, on the compressor cycle on and off this happens when either the system is low or the pressure switch at on the a/c system by the air box is bad this is a low pressure switch, this compressor must stay on to full system correctly. Disconnect the switch and put a jumper wire in the plug this will keep the clutch locked in to fill system, to get a true ready from the addition hose stop putting in freon disconnect hose and re-install hose check guage, I just went through this with my explorer I had to keep taking offf the hose to and putting back on to get a true pressure reading. Hope this helps..............

What does the switch look like?

I cannot find a location for it in Haynes. The only electrical connection I see is wrapped in rubber and is labeled diode. It doesn't look like you can easily disconnect it.

I found it. You were right, it was a bad switch. 10 minutes and $14 later I had a/c.

Thanks!
