ok, this is messed up. I pulled my NP435 out of my 79 today to swap in the 68 NP435 I had at a friends house.......they are different
I don't get it?
the gear box is identical except the back of it......
the one on the right is the one out of the 79, the one on the left is from a 68 F100. I need to swap the tail shaft to bolt up the 205.....
my question is can I swap the reverse gear from the 68 to the 79?

Pull the tailshaft off the one on the left. You're looking at the spud shaft. However...... the one on the left is going to be a 28 spline output, and the one on the right 31 spline.
I'm assuming the one on the left was mated to a Dana 21...??

yeah, thats a D21 adaptor. I knew I needed to pull it I have to figure out how to get the rear nut off so the adaptor will come off.

rear nut?
You realize these transmissions aren't interchangeable without swapping mainshafts?
Also one has the trapazoid tailshaft pattern, and the other rectangular.

yeah, their is a nut on the D21 adaptor that holds the splined shaft onto the output shaft. you have to pull the nut to get the splined shaft off then pull the adaptor housing off.
I know now that I will need to swap the main shaft I think I got lucky though. I pulled the top cover off and this is what I found:
you can see by the one on the top whay reverse wasn't working, their is damage to 3 of the gears.
it looks as if I can swap everything I need to. my plan is to swap the nessary parts from the 68 to the 79 NP435 then get the other one going later for the BII. the down fall is I have never torn a tranny apart, but I guess this is as good as any time to learn, it looked pretty straight forward. do you want a writeup on the swap?
