Greetings all,

I've just picked up an '86 Bronco II. The speedometer's not working. Any suggestions on how to tell if it's the cable or the speedometer head?

Thanks!

Yeah, disconnect the cable at the back of the speedo. I was able to do this laying on my back... in the drivers seat... head down at the brake petal ... feet in the air. With my fat clumsy hands I could just barely reach the connection at the speedo head. Ya have to sqeeze a plastic clip-like deal on the cable end to free it up and pull it off the speedo. (Plenty of light helps too). I had taken off the fusebox cover tin panel, the plastic, two-piece steering column cover, the cover panel to the right of the steering column...down low and the whole big guages, radio, vents surround trim piece. Sounds involved, but it's really only a few screws.

Then just drive it and feel, ( with one hand... :finger: ), the cable end for movement. Good luck, dave

ok, so if the cable end moves that means the speedo head's bad?

If the cable turns you have a bad speedo head. If not look at the cable then look at the speedo gear in the trans..

Fuxed it, thanks! Turns out the cable was broken halfway through. Went ahead and replaced the speed sensor while I was there.
Thanks for your help!
