I just got the bronco home the other day and found three huge cracks in the bellhousing. I was wondering if the bellhousings from teh 2.9 and 4.0 would bolt to my 2.8, I know the transmission bolt patterns are the same but what about the bolt pattern on the engine side?

If you have an 85' 2.8 it will work cause of the internal slave. the 83's and 84's with a 2.8 have a extenal slave and this results in a longer input shaft on the trans and it will not work with the newer bellhousings

it has an external slave kinda sucks i guess. how hard would it be to make a internal slave housing work? what woudl i need to get from the donor vehicle?

The tranny input shafts are different lenghts, so you can't convert. I suppose you might be able to swap input shafts, but that would hardly be worth while. There has to be someone that can send you a bellhousing from a dead tranny. Hell I threw one away a couple years ago.

would i be able to pull the tranny and use that too to make it ues teh internal or would i have to swap the engine?

I believe all the transmissions are interchangable, but driveshaft mods may be required.

Heck, if you have 4.0L donor....swap the engine tranny and everything.

Ok so if i go to the yard and find a newer donor, then if i pull the bellhousing, trannny, and clutch assembly it should work in my 84?

I can't say for sure, since I haven't actually done it. I do believe if you grab everything, you'll be good to go. If you pull from a 4.0L, you might wan the flywheel too. You'll also want the line for the clutch, and crossmember.

Basically, whatever donor you find, grab everything from the clutch master down. You con put a 4.0 flywheel/clutch/trans behind a 2.8/2.9. The 4.0 uses a 10" clutch, so it'd actually an upgrade for the small motors. keep in mind, unless you get an FM145, you're gonna need a front and rear driveshaft from a BII with the same trans. The FM146, M5OD, and A4ld Auto are all the smae length and about 3" longer than a TK5 and FM145.

Ok thanks. I didnt find anything at the yard today that would work but i did find the exact housing i need online. thanks for the help everyone. despite not finding the bellhousing i got a new carb, ac compressor, shocks(mine were bent), and rear end with a l/s for about 90 bucks. so all in all not a bad day.
