If you really want to make it shine, take it the pressure washer. Just make sure you plug off any openings and try to stay away from the seals with the high pressure. You could also use hot soap and water. I also use my grinder with a wire wheel, and lastly, liberal amounts of brake cleaner can do wonders.

I use engine degreaser then scrape it off with a puddy knife. spray again and use a wire wheel.

Unless you are going to polish it, Gunk engine cleaner and a hose do an quality job that I have found. dish soap and water will not hurt your seals.
Dont spray engine degreaser on your seals!!

It is ok if you spray engine degreaser one or twice on the seal. But that stuff will eat your seals up! Use soap and water and a pressure washer. I mean come on it is a mud truck and it will get dirty. Do you really want to risk your seals on the tranfer case just to shine it up a bit???
