ok, i decided against going with the 302 (for now) because I really need a ride back & forth to work. I'm going buy the @$&*ing $80 distributor since thats pretty much all thats keeping it from running. But, now I've got the lift on my mind. I'm gonna go 3" shackles in the rear because I already have them, but I'm trying to think of the easiest way to go 3" in the front. I really think I'm gonna buy some 2" coil spring spacers since their only like $100 and then put some of those coil spring spreaders for the extra 1", but how will i correct the alignment & steering? anybody else done a similar lift?
I think you could probably get maybe an 1 1/2" out of a spacer lift pretty easy and still be able to have an alignment done, but I think 3" with out drop brackets would be pushing it.
if you are dead set on getting 3" for cheap then you might want to look into a body lift. they run around $80-$100 and and be done in about a day if you know what you are doing. look into a body bushing set also, you will have it apart you might as well do it all at one time.

come to think of it, I think that will be cheaper anyway. I'll worry about suspension lift later, I just wanna fit some decent tires for now anyway. By the way, anyone know exactly how wide those stock alloy wheels are and what would be the widest tire i should go with? I can get some 33X12.5 big o xt's for cheap, but i think they would be too wide.
on the stock rim I think a 10.5 might fit ok but a 12.5 would probably be pushing it...I don't know though Nobody runs wider tires on the smaller rims.

The rule of thumb is 4". If you have an 8" rim, then a 12.5 is the widest that you can go. If you plan on hitting the snow a lot, then this is probably good advice, since you can really lower the air pressure and still hold a tight pressure bead.
