I got the motor running on the 79, but when I started to mess with the tranny I ran into a problem. all the forward gears work fine, but when you put it in and try to move it it grinds and pops out of gear. from the experiance I have had with manuals it is acting like the reverse gear is bad. has anyone ever rebuilt or opened one of these? I was wondering if when I replace the reverse gear if I have to replace the main shaft also or is reverse set up on a seperate shaft?

I haven't rebuilt a 435 yet, but they are supposed to be one of the easiest. I believe all the gears can be swapped on the mainshaft unlike some trannys we are all familiar with.
I also believe 1st and reverse might be the same gear....but of course there are other gears involved with reverse.
Search pirate4x4.com. I've seen a blow-up diagram of a NP435 posted there. If you can't find it, I might have it stashed away somewhere.

I am by no means an expert on tranny's, but (feel free to correct me) the popping out of gear is sometimes caused by bad syncronizers...correct?

the only thing I couldn't find was a number list to find out what parts are what. any idea?
