Swap help

Post by OffroadBEAR »

Hello,

Well, I got a line on axles for a D44/9 swap. I can get a full width front end for $100 or less and a 9in for $125 or less at the yard where I am getting my transmission. I need some help gathering info. I know that everyone did their swap their own way, but if you have a link your buildup thread or some pics or a writeup, I would be very greatful if you could post them. If I can get axles for that good of a price, my friend works in the university machine shop, so I can have various brackets made, and I am pretty handy with a wrench and a grinder, I think I will do the swap this summer and work on gathering parts till then. I will probably keep the 2.9/5sp/1350 just for reliability and mileage, which is why I was asking about clutches in my other thread. I would just like to see how other people did theirs (Nobody, I know where to find your writeup on your homepage). Thanks in advance.

I am currently doing the full width conversion. Right now I con tell you that you will have to move all spring mounts inboard 2 1/2 inches either side if you don't want to move the spring mounts out ward. I used the 77' F150 coil buckets and shock mounts but I am sure that is not a necessary part of the conversion. I am going to change the uni brake line in the front axle to accomodate the master cylinder to work as a factory unit. That is my personal preference to have a separated brake system, it my not be cost effective though.

I went out to the yard, and boy, shit was tight. Not a whole lot of old trucks laying around with a front axle. I found an F250 HD, but it was TTB, and an early 80s dodge, which had a D44, but passenger side drop (plenty of 9in axles though, and D60s). I will be checking back later, but I might also consider a D35 TTB swap since they had plenty of exploders laying around. Info on that would also be helpful. Thanks a lot.
