Someone might have pulled the carrier for a T/L or spare or something before they sold it to you and then just bolted everything back up to look fine. I have heard of worse. If you hear no noise I doubt it a r&p or spider problem as they tend to make alot of noise if they are trashed. I guess they could have blown and instead of fixing them someone just pulled the carrier as well? The front and rear gearing are completely dependant on the individual axle you pick up. You have to make sure they match though, so check your rear gears and try and find a d35 with the same. Common is 3.73 and 3.54

Just a suggestion to test the front end, try this. Switch the transfercase into 4 low, or anything 4x4, then leave it and turn the truck off, take out the rear driveshaft (on the 88, its 4 bolts on each end), but leave the front shaft and make sure the hubs lock, then start it and try to drive it. If the hubs engage, and the transfer case engages, it should drive, just the front wheels, and if the carrier is fu**ed, the truck won't move. Just a thought. If you want auto hubs for cheap, try to find them on a junkyard truck.
