Man, you are big help! Thanks a lot!
When piston pulls a scredriver as high as possible- that's my compression stroke, right?
I'll try it probably tommorrow.
Problem is, tank is dripping. Truck is in my townhouse garage with the gas filler neck right next to the fuse box. I keep a garage door open little bit, but still- it's scary. Two kids are slipping in the room over the garage.

If truck will start I am probably better off buying a new tank- what's the chance that other 20 year old tank won't leak?

There's not really any reason for the tanks to leak. Unless you are dealing with serious corrosion where you live.

As for finding Top Dead Center, The pistion hits TDC twice, once while compressing the air/fuel mixture and once while pushing the exhaust gases out.

To make sure you are on the compression stroke, you can look at the valves if you have the valve cover off, or you can leave the plug in loose, or put your finger over the hole so you can hear or feel when it's on the compression stroke. Then use your screwdriver or whatever to get to TDC.

Now I got it! I'm sure I screwed up on this one.

The skid plate was rusted right in the middle. Looks like dirt got in between tank and plate and stayed there for a long time. When I discovered a leak couple weeks ago (laying under the truck with cigarette in my mouth fixing exhaust) I patch it with Permatex Gas Tank Sealer. Well, it's dripping again.
At least I don't smoke in the garage for now! :))

Uptade!
My truck started right up after I turned distributor 180 degree.
Nobody, you were right! Thanks a lot to you and everyone who shared ideas with me. It still runs little rough (need to adjust timing). There is a exhaust leak on the drivers side and all smoke is coming to the engine compartment ( I don't remeber it see it before- plugged cat maybe?
Two more questions:
I never in my life used timing light- how do I connect it? Red to positive bat, black to neg and clip to wire #1?

Does anybody know correct vacuum routing on DS carburetor?

I will post some stuff in For Sale- maybe somebody needs my old distributor, carb and new coil.

Thanks a lot again!

Right on... glad you got it running.

Smoke is probably just oil burning off the exhaust manifold. Did you pinch off the EGR tube at the exhaust manifolds?

How you hook up the vacuum lines depends on the carb. The vacuum advance should plug into venturi vacuum port, not manifold vacuum.

Hook the timing light up just like you said. Disconnect the vacuum advance first. Clean up the timing marks on the crank pulley. I like to either smear a little paint into the 10* mark or shine it up with a screw driver. Then start the egine and point the light at the crank pulley where the pointer is. Turn the dizzy one way or the other to adjust timing. I don't recally what the timing should be on a 2.8L, but 8-12 is pretty standard. I'd go for 10 or 11. If it pings underload, back it off a degree or two.

I have a rebuilt 2150 carb. What is the venturi vacuum? I plugged vacuum advance on the right side under electric choke unit. I also had to use a smaller vacuum hose to hook up PCV which I don't like. I read somewhere I can plug it to the intake tree- it has a bigger vacuum port. There is also big port in the back of the throttle plate which I plugged. One more is on the front of the intake under the carb- I plugged it too, but I'm not sure about that.

I originally plugged EGR tubes, but it was smoking so bad that I put air pump hoses back for now- no more smoke.

I guess I'm very close to be on the road. Thanks for your help!
