TTB 4wd in a 76?

Post by DBrown »

I posted this over at pirate also but I was looking for info on swapping a TTB D44 into my 76 F100 tow rig. anyone got any info?

it has the TTB 2wd front and the only thing I was thinking that the pivot brackets might not line up. I know I will have to swap over to the 4wd gearbox and steering. so, has anyone tried this?

When I was in the U.S.A.F.,There was a guy who was married to gril in my Squadron,he swapped a straight d44 into a 75 2wd f100.It was an easy swap,at least thats what he said.Come to think about it, I dont think I've ever heard of any one swapping a TTB into 2wd.

I know that the SA will go in pretty easy but I have access to alot of D44 TTB's and thought that that suspension might work better for a tow rig, because of the way the system was designed. it will never be an extreme setup so I figure if I can get it cheap and set it up then I might come out ahead in the long run. I have seen several differences in the 2wd TTB that is in it now and the 4wd TTB that I am wanting to use so I know I will have to change the steering all together and swap in the piviot brackets. I was just wondering if any of you have heard of this being done?

I wouldn't do it for alignment issues alone. TTB is hell on tires. Other than that, I don't know if the frames are close enough to allow the pivot brackets to bolt up. I'm sure you could figure it out. I'd go straight axle. 44's can't be that hard to find down there.

there really not that bad priced if you know where to look and you don't tell the person what your doing with it. you can even find them ok, but I have a friend that has alot of TTB junk just laying there that I can use. I might just end up junking the idea and keeping it 2wd. I was just wondering if anyone has tried it and how far off the brackets are from just bolting in. I was wanting to get a good towing set up in the long run. I'm thinking some good rear leafs and good shocks. but then when I get to the front I am going to need to level it out by lifting a little. I can't seem to find a 1"-2" lift spring for the TTB 2wd. does anyone know if the 4x4 TTB springs will fit in the 2wd TTB front end? I think the coil buckets are the same but I am not sure about the lower retainer. I guess I will just go ahead and grab the TTTB D44 and see if the springs work, hell the factory 4x4 TTB springs might give me an inch of lift.
