1 fuel pump?

ok guys i took out my tank the other day and my gas was black and there was a layer of gunk every were in the tank as well as handfull of gunk at the bottom plus my fuel pump is broken(lp pump) so i was wondering if i could take a tank of of maybe an 89 explorer and jut have 1 pump on the frame rail would it fit? is the hp pump strong enough to just use 1? or should i just replace the lp pump

explorer wasent born till 91. and no the tank wont fit

ok no need now cuz i fixed my pump but while i was putting the tank back in there was a little circuler thing that poped into a little whole on the top of the tank and the line that went to it came out i think its the fuel pressure but im not sure.......can any 1 tell me wat this thing is
