More power for my 2.9L

Post by 4x4bronco »

After hunting season is over for my winter project I want to rebuild/replace my tired 2.9. I can buy a reman from Jasper engines for around $1600 bucks with a warrantt but I would like to have a little more power also. Does anyone know how to squeeze some more horses out of these engines? Is there a way to "tune" them different with the computer? Any suugesstions would be apprecited.

Putting more HP into a 2.9 is an exercise in cramming cubic dollars into cubic centimeters. There is very little you can do with out having all of your parts custom built. Then after all of that is done you will probably lose reliability. If you want power put in a 5.0 or 351.

Tek is right, it is an expensive task. There are a lot of options for the 2.9 such as headers, a chip for the computer, cold air intake, and exhaust. You can swap in a 302 for less with a good C-4 tranny, and have all the horses you want. It would be advisable to swap out both axles for better ones out of a 92 or up Xplorer. I picked up both axles for mine for $100.00 each. A good 302 and tranny will set you back approx $650.00 to $800.00, and you will need a tail section and output shaft out of a C-5.
It depends on what you want to do, how much you have or want to invest, and a place to do it.

can the headers be removed/installed with the engine in the truck? Clearly I know tons of things will have to be removed - but mainly, can the headers be successfully taken out and installed without cherry picking the engine?

Found a brand new set on ebay for $150/set. Mine are rusted to hell from header to cat to tail pipe and I'm sure they are the reason for my air leak and low HP.

edit: I meant manifolds  see - I'm learnin

mine does 70mph easy - perhaps you have another problem...like timing or an issue with the distributor cap. When I had to pass my emissions, I had one shop retard the timing and then I went to another shop to pass the test - the truck was slow as balls and had almost 0 power.
