Temperature sensor question

Post by zookeyknee »

When I got my Bll I installed tri guage display. The temp guage is mechanical . I put the probe end of the copper tube from the guage to where I removed what I thought was the old dash guage sensor right next to gooseneck t-stat. My new mechanical guage works perfectly and dash one quit so I thought I did right couldnt figure where to install orig sender because the sensor has to be in water jacket. So I let it go a T coupling wouldnt work as one I made for mechanical and electric for my original and new oil probes.Wondering is this electrical temp sending unit I replaced also responsible for the EEC computer temp input??? also is there a way to get my original temp guage to work? Two guages are better than one. thanks in advance as I know how important engine temp is to running the show That is now know. Ford Man out.Oh almost forgot duh. 87 Bll 5 speed stick A/C 4x4.2.9l.

The temp guage is seperate from the one that sends a signal to the EEC. They are 2 seperate units. I'm not sure on how to check the stock temp guage to see if it is bad or not.
They way I did it was I disconnected the wires from the guage, and shorted it directly to ground, and see if the guage in the dash moves or not. It works or resistance, as the probe gets hot it changes the resistance to the guage, and that is what makes it move.
You can also take the dash out as a last resort to see if the printed circuit on the back of the guage cluster is bad, and you can then check the guage itself.
Hope this helps ya.

Thanks to know I tapped the right sending unit when I installed my mechanical temp guage part of a sun pro triple two inch guage set.my eec is getting the right input because i didnt toutch anything else sensor wise. My dash temp guage worked fine til I had to remove the factory sending unit to stick my new mechanical probe in that spot near the gooseneck. So WHERE can I put my original sending unit so it will be in water prestone cooling system to get a good reading as my dash orig equ guage will work again. thanks again got a lot of help and insight since religiously checking the forums for this my first year with My loved Bll,FM45
