87 B 2 rear end nightmare

Post by zookeyknee »

I just replaced my CV drive shaft on 87 B 2 after much searching with a nice used double cardan one new yoke and oil seal also. The CV ran for a month with two steel balls and one third the cage missing. Now I find my rear end is "shot" Its snapping loudly feels like its half off the spring also pops & jumps in the air a little.Everything is attatched solid exteriorwise. Two mechanics said had to replace the whole rear end. They looked at my 23 yr old as it were a stanley steamer. Im in Michigans Upper Peninsula and rust made these extinct up here. Mine came from Georgia love it my daily & only driver.Found a stripped one at jy 300 bucks ouch.Disability stops me from that kind of wrenching. Also a good auto shop will do swap for 225 on SSD anyone know alternatives before I bankrupt myself.Any input appreciated, Thanks Still Ford Man. 3.73 ratio ABS and limited slip.

Well its RABS does have rear ABS but I think thats external controlled by a module its behind driver door pillar Must have sensors on rear end Dont know. JY says 87-90 B2s only fit for rear ends. Mechanic saic my axles were locked wasnt specific but from his experience 20 plus yrs My late fathers mechanic by turning wheels and d-shaft. I dont think he actually looked inside the pumpkin thats why Im asking you B twoers for some insight. Symtoms are loud matalic snaps enough to vibrate body Quicl snaps almost consstant on powered cornering less to none straight driving. No noise when coasting corners clutch in.Also noise when going reverse then drive. My old CV made noise as i said two balls fell out starting this Fiasco .Drive shaft rebuilt double cardon from 85 B2 is working fine I think. Going in country friend told me of two b2s behind a farmers barn will check them out this weekend. This sounds too good to be true but fingers crossed. Thanks again for any tips for my problem.

Checked out the farmers Mini boneyard sure enough two mostly intact rusted B-2s.An 83 and an 84. The 84 has my 3.73 gearing axle code 44 no posi.Thats fine with me the farmer saud 50 bucks I remove. will even tow it out of the field to up front and even "tip her on her side for me" Now the BIG question. Will it "bolt up" to my 87 not minding the options.I really need to know. Thanks in a big way... 40 Yr Ford man
