New to broncos, LandCruiser guy..

Post by 89Bronco13 »

So... some chick ran a stop sign and totalled my FJ80. So i decided to go a different rout and i got an 89 bronco2. Im excited about the change, just feel like i know nothing... I have some 285/75 16 firestone destination mt's and really wanna fit them on the bronco. With a 4 inch suspension and 2 inch body lift, im sure they will fit, but are the diffs, and driveshafts strong enough? Im sure ill need new driveshafts.. But have no idea where to get them. any help is appreciated, i love forums and plan on being alot of help to people when i learn up on these cool little rigs.
Thanks alot

hey man, good to have ya on here!

from my experience so far, the driveshafts on my 87 have held up very well actually.
the rear and front axles are decent on the bii, the ford 7.5 and the dana 28. but with larger tires they dont seem to hold up very long. i shot the teeth of the ring gear through the diff cover when i had my 7.5 in. and the dana 28 held up for awhile, but i recently got rid of it.

what i did, and what alot of guys do is swap in the axles from under a 91-94 ford explorer. you will get the stronger ford 8.8 rear and the Dana 35 TTB front.

you can find the 8.8 with limitid slip fairly easily. alot of mustang guys use them in their drag cars and alot of jeep guys use them too. and there are plenty of new parts to choose from.

the dana 35 TTB is also a good axle, and will hold up to 35" tires very well.
there is alot you can do to them, but its a little pricey sometimes, and to fit it in there you sometimes have to trim a small section off of your lift bracket. parts can be found easily and other parts can be made to fit very easily. like f150 shock towers, jeep coil springs, jeep dana 35 carriers so you can fit a locker, etc...

and some guys do a Solid Axle Swap, putting in like an early bronco dana 44, or jeep axles. it takes alot of fabrication, but is sometimes worth it.

hope that helps a little and answers your questions. the bii is a truck with endless possibilities. its only your imagination and your wallet that hold you back.

have fun!
