FM-145 to M5OD-R1

ok, ive been crunching on all of this in my head for awhile. i know that there will be some pretty "common sense" questions in this post, but im just making sure that MY common sense is actually considered COMMON.

i pulled the t-case and FM-145 today and got everything ready for the M5OD that i will be picking up later this morning

i know i need to keep the flywheel, bellhousing, pilot bearing, throughout bearing, clutch release mechanism(s), flexplate, torque converter from the FM-145

this is the noob questions, and i know the answer, but i just want some back up on the answer.

i also keep my slave? and my clutch for my 2.9l will work on the 4.0's transmission? crossmember will stay in the stock location? and my transmission will mount to the crossmember the same (so ill still be able to use my "ghettoFab" tranny lift)?

the slave is different,the 146 and M5 is longer so the crossmember has to be moved,rear driveshaft has to be shortened,front one longer,the shifter is further back so ya need to change the plate on the floor.get the clutch master/slave and line from the donor. might as well get the 4.0 clutch P-Plate,flywheel,starter and blockplate

You may want to change the clutch to the 10" 4.0L unit as you are going from a 3.76 first gear to a 3.40 first gear.

well, i went to the pickandpulls today, with no luck. on the phone they promised that they had what i needed, so i go out there and pay the $4 entry fee at each of the 7 yards i went too. and NOTHING, not one explorer/ranger/aerostar manual transmission! all automatics...

how hard is the M5OD-R1 to come by?
anyone got a working one that they are willing to sell for a decent price, ill even cover shipping.

look for a 146 then. whats rong with the 145?

yeah, looked for the 146 also, they just dont have anything. the only standard tranny's that anyone had were fullsize fords and s-10's no rangers or anything.

the 145 lost pretty much all the berings im guessing, lost each gear in just over 7 miles. 5th down. now tranny wont shift to anywhere but first and neutral, and the shifter will only allow about an inch of movement from back to front.

took the 145 off lastnite and seperated the T-case, the shaft is pretty loose. i found out that my problem was not being geared to high for my tires. but my drain plug that was frozen in place decided to come loose finally, but the only problem is that it decided to come loose as i was on a 400 mile trip to San Antonio at nite.... and i have no indicators for tranny temp or anything like that, so i had no clue that i was driving without oil, and it was also raining so all the water just cleaned the fluid off of the truck... so when i looked at it i guess thats why i didnt notice...

i havent torn the tranny apart yet, but i will tomorrow. and ill let ya know the damage. but it just seemed easied to swap, when ya break your supposed to upgrade right? haha

Make sure to call before you venture and have the yard verify the item you are looking for,
it has been my observation the yards that either don't want to have someone look or tell you
imiadiatly that they have the part, are normally not the one to deal with and I really don't mind
telling the guy on the other how I feel.
It's your time and gas money.

texas get alot of $$$$ for a M5, up here you can find um for $150/200

actually, most of the yards around here are really cheap. but they mostly have chevy/jeep/dodge parts, very few fords :( (thats a good thing, but it sucks for me haha)

i can get any complete front/rear end for $85. thats even with them pulling the axles themselves. any transmission is 180-230 depending on how long they have had it. and i can get any motor for 100 bucks flat. the only hard part is finding parts that i need or that i can use.
killed me that i was saving for the tranny while i was there though, or i would have bought this bii for parts. it is an 87 like mine, but the eddie bouer* edition. IT WAS PERFECT no rust, no dents, just had no drivetrain. interior was flawless. they only wanted $240 for the whole thing... to say the least, ill be back as soon as i can!
