bad alternator now bad battery???????

Last night as I was driving home from hockey my radio,lights and wipers started to go slow and fade and eventually my car died from the alternator dying and then draining the battery. Today I threw in a new alternator and jump started the b2 to get it running. but it still dies if you don't keep your foot into it... was the battery to dead for the new alternator to charge it , or is the new alternator faulty ?????? The battery was like a month old before it was killed last night
