1989 2.9 Ranger pinging!

I just swapped the 2.9 from my B2 over to my 89 ranger and now when you are at cruising speed or when you let off the gas to shift it pings. I don't think its bad gas since I always use shell and have never had this problem. I'm going to try to get ahold of a timing light but it didn't ping in my b2 like this. Any ideas?

Well as you are letting off the throttle it pings, it seems to do it as the throttle plate is closing almost like the fuel is leaning out.

retard the timing a little,see if it goes away

Well took me long enough but I got my timing set to where it needs to be now it still pings! I sounds like cheap fuel but I never use that! Confused...

When I checked it before I timed it it was at 20 degrees BTDC. I didn't want to go back any further so I moved it forward to 10 degrees where it should be. Didn't change anything.

you unplug the spout connector before timming it

sure did, like I said never pinged like this when the engine was in my B2

well, keep bringing the timing back till it stops pinging

Well ended up going to 5 degrees btc and the pinging stopped! Geez I feel dumb after all that!
