Well despite my freaking out over the rust on my B2, my neighbor and aspiring mechanic had a look at it.
Our decision was that as long as we can bleed the brakes in due course all should (touch wood) be ok.
Since then, we have replaced the thermostat (which was sitting open) and heater core - which looked like it had been pooched for a long time. HELL of a job on the thermostat btw - the diagrams in my book never mentioned all the belts in the way and the lack of space....
Since then I have noticed a couple of things - when it runs now (at the correct temp) you can feel an actual difference in the engine efficiency. Where as before, in 4th, it shuddered at the 45mph mark - now it can hit 50mph. Not that Im going to push it - it was one of those accidental things.
Ive also noted that the fan bearing is all but gone. The fan still turns, but it wobbles an makes a noticeable noise under the hood.
Also, I was pleased to see my carb and choke look pretty clean despite the concerns Ive had. Its at least not back firing through the carb, which I had on other older cars before.
Last but not least, I now realize there is a real problem starting the darned thing, when its warm. Here is what I have noted
- when its cold and the choke is engaged, it starts first time.
- when its hot and I just turn the key it doesnt ever kick in - however, if I hold the gas pedal down just at the right level, it kicks in eventually/quicker
So that leads me to the conclusion that it needs a richer mixture to start. What would need that to kick in? Im really at a dead end on this one - please share your thoughts.....

Ive not checked visually, although you do notice a difference in the idling speed from when the engine is cold and the choke is closed. Ive just assumed that it did open up. I will check that tonight and see.....
