88 B2 trans.

Post by Jammer1 »

I 've got an 88 Bronco 2 4X4 with a 2.9 and (mitsu.) 5 speed manual. I have had the trans. rebuilt 2 times and it is out again. I moved away for awhile but am back in NC with my old mech. He does not work on trans. and everyone he knows does not want to mess with it. Does anyone have any suggestion?

Greensboro. The transmission guy I talked to said that Mitsu. trans. were hard to get parts for. Does he know what he's talking about. The 2 times I got it rebuilt (2 different guys) , I only got about 50-60,000 miles on each. It was all highway miles. It starts out losing 5th gear and then it all goes.

The best way to make them last is to not use 5th gear unless you're going down hill with a tailwind.

The biggest problem with rebuilding is they use what's called a cluster gear which is very very expensive to replace. No rebuilder can do anything to make these things last.

My best adivce would be to just run used transmissions until you're sick of that game.

I hate to get rid of my B 2. It gets great mileage. Can I get a remanufactured trans. for it from ford or do they still make one? Should I not get more than 60,000 out of it? Thats about 2 years for me.
